A quote-ready request

Six things to send with your inquiry.

A few details go a long way. Send what you have; our team can help fill in the gaps.

01

Material & grade

Name the material: hot rolled, HRPO / P&O, cold rolled, galvanized or paint lock. Include the required grade or specification and mill condition if known; do not substitute a finish name for a grade. Material condition affects strength, forming and tool selection.

02

Thickness, size & quantity

Use thickness × width × length with units. Give a piece count for every line item. For coil inquiries, provide width, thickness, quantity by weight and any ID / OD limits. For critical fit or forming, confirm decimal thickness and the applicable tolerance.

03

Processing & drawings

Identify shearing, leveling, safety edging, forming, laser cutting or other processing. Send a dimensioned drawing with revision, units, critical tolerances, hole details and orientation where relevant. A rough-cut blank may have an agreed trim allowance; a finished cut-to-size order needs agreed dimensions and squareness. No blanket allowance applies, and tight tolerances can affect cost and timing.

04

Surface & documentation

State coating, oil condition, cosmetic face, protective film or surface requirements. Request mill test reports and traceability at quotation if needed.

05

Delivery & timing

Provide pickup or delivery, destination ZIP code, needed-by date, unloading equipment and any bundle-weight limits.

06

Your contact details

Include company, contact name, phone and email. PDF, DXF, DWG, photos or a dimensioned sketch can help; drawings are optional for simple orders. Email drawings to sales@bluestarmetals.com. Tell us which requirements are firm and which you need help defining.

A clear sheet order starts like this

Cold rolled steel • 0.0598 in × 48 in × 96 in • 10 sheets

Add the required grade, finish, tolerances, documentation and delivery details. This example is an inquiry format, not a stock or availability statement.

Steel terms & buying questions

Quick answers for choosing material, preparing a drawing and checking the numbers.

Material & finish

Gauge or decimal thickness?

Send decimal thickness with units whenever possible. If using gauge, name the material and confirm the required thickness and tolerance. Gauge is a nominal reference: 16-ga carbon steel is commonly 0.0598 in; 16-ga galvanized is commonly 0.0635 in. Neither guarantees actual measured thickness.

Compare thickness and gauge ↗

What do G30, G60 and G90 mean?

These galvanized-sheet designations specify minimum average zinc coating mass in a triple-spot test, total both sides: G30 = 0.30 oz/ft², G60 = 0.60 oz/ft² and G90 = 0.90 oz/ft². They are not coating weights per side and do not identify the steel grade.

Use the coating required by your specification. The designation alone does not establish a guaranteed service life.

Keep coating, steel grade and finish requirements separate. Include the required coating designation on your inquiry.

Which grade or finish should I request?

Describe the application and share an existing specification, drawing or previous material documentation. Mark unknown requirements clearly so sales can help resolve them before an order is confirmed.

Hot rolled P&O means pickled and oiled: pickling removes mill scale, and oil helps protect the cleaned surface during handling and storage. A finish name does not replace a grade or specification.

How do hardness and temper affect my order?

Material condition affects strength, forming and tool selection. Specify the required grade, hardness or mill condition when known; do not assume all steel forms alike.

Dimensions & drawings

Which dimensions and tolerances should I specify?

List thickness × width × length, units and quantity. Cut-to-length converts coil into lengths; cut-to-size identifies finished dimensions. A blank is a piece prepared for further work.

State required thickness, width, length and squareness tolerances. Squareness describes how closely the corners approach right angles. Distinguish finished dimensions from rough blanks with machining or trimming allowance, and confirm those allowances in the quote.

A gauge chart does not set an acceptance range. The applicable specification, product and agreed order requirements determine tolerances.

Is a drawing required?

Simple rectangular sheets can often be described with dimensions and quantity. For parts with holes, notches, forming or critical features, email the current drawing and revision. Include a dimensioned PDF alongside CAD files when available, and identify the units.

Documentation & reference data

What are MTRs and heat-number traceability?

A mill test report records specified test results and material identity. A heat number identifies a steelmaking batch. Keeping that identity through processing may require agreed handling and documentation.

Request mill reports and any required traceability at quotation so the team can confirm the documentation and handling needed.

How accurate is the weight calculator?

The sheet-weight calculator uses the pounds per square foot on Blue Star Metals’ reference cards. Sheet area (width × length ÷ 144) × the selected card rate gives book weight per piece; quantity gives the total. Actual scale weight can vary with material thickness, dimensions and mill production. Packaging and pallets are excluded.

Galvanized sheet uses its own card rates; G30, G60 and G90 coating designations are separate order requirements and are not additional adjustments in this tool. Tread plate rates already include the raised pattern.

For example, an 11-gauge carbon-steel 48 × 96-inch sheet is 32 ft² × 5 lb/ft² = 160 lb by the card method. Use confirmed mill or scale weights for final shipment planning. The coil-length calculator’s measured-thickness mode is a separate estimate for uncoated steel using 0.2836 lb/in³.

Where do the reference values come from?

Gauge values are nominal industry references; see the Metal Supermarkets gauge chart. Coating terminology is explained by the American Galvanizers Association. These references do not replace your purchase specification or mill certification.
