Understanding your weight calculation
How is book weight calculated?
Width × length ÷ 144 gives square feet per piece. Multiply that area by the selected card weight in lb/ft², then by the piece count. The calculator keeps the printed rate during calculation and rounds the final weight to two decimal places.
For 11-gauge hot rolled, cold rolled or HRPO, the card lists 0.1196 in and 5.00 lb/ft². A 4 × 8-foot sheet is 32 ft² and weighs 160.00 lb by this book method.
Galvanized sheet & coating designations
Galvanized uses the separate Blue Star galvanized card. For 11 gauge, the card lists 0.1233 in and 5.15625 lb/ft², or 165.00 lb for a 4 × 8-foot sheet.
G30, G60 and G90 are separate coating requirements. This tool uses the card’s standard book weight and does not adjust weight for a selected coating designation.
Tread plate & rounded card values
The raised diamond pattern is already included in the tread card’s lb/ft² values. Do not add another pattern allowance.
Our tread reference rounds decimal thickness to three places and its 4 × 8-foot sheet weights to one decimal place. The calculator uses the printed lb/ft² rate for every size. For example, 6.16 × 32 = 197.12 lb; the card’s sheet column shows 197.1 lb. Both values are shown for reference.
Book weight & actual weight
Book weight uses the standard pounds per square foot from Blue Star Metals’ reference cards. Actual scale weight can vary with thickness, dimensions and mill production. Packaging and pallets are excluded.
